Unlock the Spy Secrets to True Inspiration

Ever tried to “persuade” a colleague or client, only to hit a wall? Turns out, inspiration beats influence every time; it’s about unlocking their ideas, not pushing yours. Let me share a profound, learning moment from one of my operations: During an initial meeting with a potential defector, the Russian spy said, “You’re not convincing me of anything.  I already know exactly what I want, and how I want to proceed.” That was a powerful learning moment. Instead of levers of influence or persuasion tactics to get him to agree to what I wanted, I needed to focus on his goals: Education for his family, health care, and a comfortable lifestyle, all while aligning with U.S. interests. Using my four keys to communication (seek opinions, talk in terms of their priorities, non-judgmental curiosity, and empower them with choices), I quickly shifted the conversation and made it all about him. I made sure to ask him, “Does that sound good to you?” He said “Yes” and together we built a powerhouse alliance. The key to building this partnership was inspiration. Instead of trying to persuade him to do things my way, I inspired him to work with me, acquiring vital intelligence while also being a resource for his priorities.
